Repetition creates a timeless, communal otherworld, a floating ethereal cycle that is both rooted in biological rhythms and in the beyond or the meta-biological.

Any activation of the hips-sex-butt-pelvis relates to the source of all life, the womb. This music is definitely a respectful prayer in honor of the sweet, the feminine, the great mother — the sensuous life-giving aspects of ourselves and our lives — and to the Earth, the mother of us all. To shake your rump is to be environmentally aware.

The songs on this collection go straight to the heart of the matter. The first song by Clara Nunes re-tells a legend concerning two of the Orishas: the African (Yoruba) gods, Iansa and Ogun. Each Orisha embodies three levels of existence at once: 1) a force of nature such as wind, lightning, the earth, or the ocean, 2) a person who once lived on this earth (historical personages much like Jesus or Buddha or Mohammed) and 3) a psychological archetype — perhaps a trickster, a strong woman, or a warrior. In northeastern Brazil the worship of the Orishas is called Candomblé, and it incorporates ritual rhythms that have often been appropriated and secularized in popular songs. One can feel the direct link between the ecstatic release of rhythmically based popular songs and the spirituality that is their roots.

Sub-atomic particle physics shows us that matter is nothing but interlocking rhythms and energies. There is a common respect for the sanctity of the groove.

Although I have chosen many songs that reveal an African influence in their lyrics, one should not get the idea that sambas take only Afro-Brazilian culture as their subjects. One can also be transported by the groove while singing hilarious topical songs such as “S.P.C.” or a classic love song such as “Sufoco.” And, as in all successful popular songs in which the subject is a metaphor, every song is more “about” the attitude than the specifics of what is being said. As an example, in “Olerê Camará,” Alcione asks the Capoeira brothers to “open the circle.” Capoeria is traditionally a male-dominated martial art, dance, musical and philosophical system — choreographed kick-boxing with music. In recent years, women have been brought into the Capoeira Societies, and I suspect the song is as much about redefining women’s changing social roles as it is specifically about being allowed to demonstrate one’s prowess in the Capoeira circle.

“Like all art, it is what it is, but it’s something greater besides.”

– David Byrne

MARTINHO DA VILA ON SAMBA

I’m a singer and a composer. Samba is the mainstay of my career — my main success. But I’ve only done five out of 20 albums exclusively of samba. Samba is for dancing and listening to — for getting across a message — but all in a very relaxed way.

Samba, like all popular music, including almost all American and Brazilian music, has African origins. It began with the slaves to lighten the hard labor. In Brazil, it’s always been more relaxed, to liberate energy. The samba emerged through drums and dancing. It evolved in Bahia and Rio de Janeiro and then spread.

I’ve been to New York several times. I like it very much. I’ve sung in Washington and San Francisco. The first time, people thought Brazilian music was only bossa nova, which wasn’t Samba for them, but it is. But samba of the samba schools with mulatto girls and tambourines — the more visual side — is one of the most powerful of feelings. You write a song and it’s sung “dressed up,” with fantasy and fancy dress. It’s a moving theatre with thousands of people. A samba school has about 3,000 members. The great orchestra of 300 or so drummers. An enormous audience of thousands. It’s fantastic…

I don’t analyze the things I do, I just do them. Analysis is something else. But, things always evolve. As you advance, you get experience and put more things in. You know more music. You enrich musically. You meet great musicians. You write sambas with richer melodies. It’s like that — the same motivation as writing a letter.
Samba is fundamental. In other rhythms you only do one kind of dance. But not in samba. It’s much freer. You can dance samba your own way.

M. da Vila

Most of these studio recordings were made over the past 15 years. And, although the samba has been through many styles and stages since the early part of the century (the Brazilian recordings of Carmen Miranda are wonderful), I have chosen songs that represent the form as it lives, breathes, and evolves in the contemporary market place… It survives and adapts despite the onslaught of rock & roll, slick ballad singers, and, now, heavy metal (which, incidentally, is quite popular in Brazil). Some of these songs are associated with the famous carnival samba “schools” in which live versions would be performed during carnival with thousands (!!!) of drummers, dancers and singers. Often the lead singers are the same as those on the studio recordings and, although there are many recordings of these massive displays, the sound does not really survive the transition from street environment to speaker. The radio stations in Rio play the versions found on this album along with songs by the likes of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tracy Chapman, the Housemartins, Bon Jovi, the rock group Paralamas do Sucesso, Roberto Carlos and, recently a new wrinkle from Bahia, the vocal and drum ensembles known as bloco afros.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0404/5186/6784/products/Beleza-Tropical-2-Novo-Mais-Melhor.jpg?v=1613170706
jim-white-drill-a-hole-in-that-substrate-and-tell-me-what-you-see-bonus-tracks-edition
Jim White - Drill A Hole In That Substrate And Tell Me What You See

It's the 20th anniversary of Jim White's beloved and haunting outer-space alt.country classic that has a title so long nobody can remember the name of it.

It's on vinyl for the first time (pressed on 2 LPs in Substrate Black, in a gatefold jacket). All is silent but for the dreamy hum of the vending machines and the gentle fluttering of those luminescent wings. Down in the Caddy I see the faint halo of a cigarette being sucked on just above the darkened steering wheel. A moment of pure bliss overtakes me. It’s a few weeks later, and my truck’s broken down near a construction site. While I’m hunched over the engine trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with it (accelerator linkage), I overhear the can-do foreman bark out at one of his helpers the phrase that will eventually become the title of this album. “Drill a hole in that substrate and tell me what you see!” he bellows. I find myself quietly laughing—no, maybe sighing in relief. Without knowing it he’s named some ghost inside my head, but which one? Why do those words stay with me? Finally I get it—it’s an allegory of the physics of my life; the construction site is my mind, and the substrate I’ve been drilling holes in is the tangled maze of impressions that Jesus, poverty, and the loneliness of being raised an outsider in the South have conspired to lay beneath my feet. Hearing the phrase brings a sigh of relief because at long last I possess a handy name for the machinery of my existence. When you can call some such thing by name, often times it gives you a mysterious and happy kick in the ass, something akin to “power”.

Thinking back, from as far as I can remember, from earliest childhood I’ve been drilling, looking for something the surface world didn’t provide, something to make life worth living. Sad, but true. I’d unearth some relic or mysterious object and call out; “Come see what I found!” but for the most part not only did people not want to see, but they fled at the very sound of my voice. In recent years I’ve come to realize that what I was digging up were artifacts comprised mostly of personal bullshit. No wonder people were uninterested.

Eventually, like most failed John The Baptists, I resigned myself to the fact that I’d probably spend my life drilling alone, digging up things of value to me and me alone. By 1983, Alice had established the 48-acre Sai Anantam Ashram outside of Los Angeles. She quietly began recording music from the ashram, releasing it within her spiritual community in the form of private press cassette tapes. On May 5, Luaka Bop will release the first-ever compilation of recordings from this period, making these songs available to the wider public for the first time. Entitled ‘World Spirituality Classics, Volume 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda,’ the release is the first installment in a planned series of spiritual music from around the globe; curated, compiled and distributed by Luaka Bop.

This powerful, largely unheard body of work finds Alice singing for the first time in her recorded catalog, which dates back to 1963 and includes appearances on six John Coltrane albums, alongside Charlie Haden and McCoy Tyner, and 14 albums as bandleader starting with her Impulse! debut in 1967 with ‘A Monastic Trio.’ The songs featured on the Luaka Bop release have been culled from the four cassettes that Alice recorded and released between 1982 and 1995: ‘Turiya Sings,’ ‘Divine Songs,’ ‘Infinite Chants,’ and ‘Glorious Chants.’ The digital, cassette and CD release will feature eight songs. The double-vinyl edition features two additional songs, “Krishna Japaye” from 1990’s ‘Infinite Chants, and the previously unreleased “Rama Katha” from a separate ‘Turiya Sings’ recording session.

Luaka Bop teamed with Alice’s children to find the original master tapes in the Coltrane archive. The recordings were prepared for re-mastering by the legendary engineer Baker Bigsby (Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, John Coltrane), who had overseen the original sessions in the 80s and 90s. The compilation showcases a diverse array of recordings in addition to Alice’s first vocal work: solo performances on her harp, small ensembles, and a 24-piece vocal choir. The release is dotted with eastern percussion, synthesizers, organs and strings, making for a mesmerizing, even otherworldly, listen. Alice was inspired by Vedic devotional songs from India and Nepal, adding her own music sensibility to the mix with original melodies and sophisticated song structures. She never lost her ability to draw from the bebop, blues and old-time spirituals of her Detroit youth, fusing a Western upbringing with Eastern classicism. In all, these recordings amount to a largely untold chapter in the life story of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda.

In addition to the recordings, GRAMMY-winning music historian Ashley Kahn has written extensive liner notes on the collection. Alice will be celebrated at events throughout the United States, Europe and South America in the coming year. It is the first in a planned series of environmental recordings by Floating Points to be filmed and recorded at different locations around the world. ‘Reflections – Mojave Desert’ was made last year, as Floating Points traveled to the Mojave to rehearse in between US touring. Immediately struck by the distinct sonic tapestry created by the rock formations and valleys, they set up a recording operation and filmed this new work at the base of the natural sculptures they encountered. The music softly shifts from the Fender Rhodes introduction to “Silurian Blue,” an expansive improvised full band piece that balances refined restraint with explosiveness. In one scene, “Kites,” Floating Points aka Sam Shepherd walks through a valley with a super directional microphone, swinging it back and forth as a synthesizer loop gets faster to showcase the natural reverb and shifting phase of sound waves. “Kelso Dunes” signals the film’s final act: the sky grows dark, lasers flash, the band and rocks gleaming in the pitch black around them.

“Whilst we were out playing and exploring the area around us – the sound reflecting from the rocks, the sound of the wind between them, complete stillness at night and packs of roaming coyotes in the distance, It became apparent that we could use this as its own unique recording environment.

The project started simply because we were on tour with the band, had just finished FYF fest in LA, and had a week before picking up the rest of the tour in phoenix. on the way we stopped for a week near Joshua Tree National Park. the idea was to go somewhere fairly remote and setup to rehearse. it was peak summer, so we setup outside and would be playing throughout the day and night. Maybe that’s why Alexandre Kassin’s new album, Relax, has two songs about this incredible heartbreak. First there’s “A Paisagem Morta,” a dark bossa nova tune about those initial moments once the breakup is final, when you begin to rediscover yourself. “The lyrics are about trying to keep things happening,” says Kassin, a leading producer and instrumentalist in Brazilian music. Then there’s “As Coisa Que Nos Nao Fizemo,” a mid-tempo song about divorce. Here, above twinkling chimes and stilted drums, Kassin keeps the vibe loose, reflecting upon the ways he and his former partner failed each other. In a way, these songs are therapeutic; Kassin himself went through a very bad divorce. “It’s just now getting better,” he says thoughtfully. Over the course of his career, Kassin has produced roughly 100 records for singers like Marisa Monte and Bebel Gilberto, has recorded with Sean O’Hagan and made a full album based on Nintendo GameBoy sounds. He has played bass for Caetano Veloso’s live shows and conceptualized the Imperial Orchestra band.

Relax isn’t all gloom and doom, though. Across 11 tracks, Kassin flirts with Latin rhythms, Brazilian pop, and straight-ahead soul, using this varied sonic array to tell imagined tales of death, drug usage, politics and fate. On the deeply personal “Momento De Clareza,” Kassin sings of his sixth sense. In 1996, he and his band were slated to fly on the TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais Flight 402, which struck two buildings and several houses and killed all 95 people on board. Kassin was finishing an assignment and had the foresight to leave sooner than expected, eluding the ill-fated flight by a day. “I wanted the group to leave sooner,” the musician recalls. “If I didn’t push everybody to leave sooner, we’d all be dead.” The contrast here is intriguing: the arrangement itself feels bright and danceable, yet the theme is incredibly sullen. Such is the dichotomy of Kassin’s Relax, a record that speaks directly to the yin and yang of everyday life, and the uncertainty that comes with simply existing. Despite their upbeat, pop-centric arrangements, Kassin tackles heavy, thought-provoking themes. “Estricnina,” or Strychnine (yes, the poison) in English, is a self-described “strange tale.” “It’s a person propositioning another to take Strychnine,” Kassin says. “It’s an experimental samba with dark lyrics and happy sounds.” Similar in theme, “Comprimidos Demais” is about a couple that uses pills to control their mood; “O Anestesista,” Kassin says, is the most politically charged song on Relax. “In this climate,” he continues, “we wish we had a personal anesthetist to help you forget about what’s going on.” In the end, Relax isn’t Kassin’s most conceptual release. This one’s rooted in dreams and surrealism, but it’s still grounded enough to reach listeners where they are. “I wanted to make something with different arrangements and different aesthetics,” Kassin concludes. “I wanted to explore a different, diverse world.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0404/5186/6784/products/KassinRelax3000lo_37117d4d-b19d-4cc7-b368-111d4e6cdd4d.jpg?v=1613331753
domenico-lancellotti-the-good-is-a-big-god
Domenico Lancellotti - The Good Is A Big God

Tracklist:

1. Out of fear.” He’s right. To do anything creative is to exist outside your body, to teeter between reality and sanity. Full-time creativity requires God, fear, and intensity: you have to exist in whatever space you occupy, surveying the scene while remaining on the periphery of it. It’s from this mindset that Domenico created his new work, The Good is a Big God, a 14-track collection of reflective samba that first took shape almost six years ago.

Domenico was asked to take part in an artistic occupation in the city of London during the 2012 Summer Olympics. There, he reunited with famed British musician Sean O’Hagan—whom he’d met a few years prior during a show that paid homage to Tropicália. Before he left for London, Domenico sent O’Hagan a few musical sketches he’d done on guitar; by the time the Brazilian made it to the U.K., O’Hagan had string arrangements to accompany Domenico’s music. “We recorded nine songs that served as the soundtrack for my final Rio-Occupation project—an art film called Soundistante in a big exhibition,” says Domenico a renowned drummer with the likes of Gilberto Gil and member of the now-defunct the +2s. The musician added lyrics to some of these songs once he returned to Brazil. His friend and label mate Kassin helped Domenico write the words for “Insatiable,” and O’Hagan wrote the lyrics for “Logo.” “There was a record ready!” Domenico recalls with excitement.

The Good is a Big God is also partially inspired by a trip he took with his wife to a Brazilian national park called The Serra dos Órgãos. They rented a house and went climbing, which inspired four other songs: “A Alma do Vento (The Soul of the Wind),” “Volver-se (Turn Back),” “Dama da Noite (Lady of the Night)” and “Pare de Correr (Stop Running).” Listening to these songs, one can hear a sense of isolation and oneness with nature. It’s the type of art that arrives in a calming stream of thought, when it’s just you and God in conversation with one another. That focus also peppers a track like “Arvores, (Trees)” an airy folk-influenced tune that feels remarkably wide open and scenic, as if Domenico is surveying heaven, looking toward brighter days. In what might be the bleakest time in modern politics (and the world at large), The Good is a Big God is a much-needed respite from the rigors of everyday life.

A large-scale recording with grand implications, the album’s subtle nuances and insightful words only strengthen Domenico’s stature as one of Brazil’s most forthright Tropicalia musicians, and as a person who has the audience’s best interest at heart. He wants us all to love, to look up and embrace the sky, to forge ahead with a hug and a smile. “From the Olympics to the Olympiad, I witnessed a lot,” Domenico concludes. “The world ends and resumes every day. I got a star in the form of people who now walk beside me. I know that work never ends, but for now that’s it.” Fellowship isn’t crazy. That’s what God intended. — Marcus J. It was born out of a misunderstanding between him and the India Navigation producer Bob Cummins, and was recorded when he was at a crossroads in his career with an unlikely crew. Among them was a guitarist who was also a spiritual guru, an organist who would go on to co-write and produce “The Message,” and a classically trained pianist—his wife at the time, Bedria Sanders—who played the harmonium despite never having seen one. At times ambient and serene, at others funky and modal, PHAROAH radically departed from his earlier work.
