It was instantly acclaimed as a classic of the newly burgeoning “sadcore” scene, a point which amused the Florida-based songwriter to no end. “For 20 years I’d written these dark little songs, ” he notes dryly, “Every once in a while I’d play them for someone and they’d shout, ‘Stop! That sucks so bad it makes my ears pop!’, then a thing called alt country came along and, boom, all of a sudden everyone’s hollering ‘Jim, you’re a friggin’ genius!’ I mean, what happened???”

No sooner though, did Jim’s slightly warped worldview arrive at the fringes of the fashionable than his personal life went to pieces. “It was paralyzing, being so appreciated and, yet so destitute. I remember, right when this was going on I got a postcard from Rome. Some fan of mine was visiting the Vatican when he heard one of my songs blasting away on a boom box, echoing through the streets of the holy city! I thought ‘damn! First, British trip-hop mavens Morcheeba, heard a demo Jim had made of “10 Miles” and promptly volunteered to produce the track. “They understood that I didn’t have the slightest clue as to how to make a living in that oxymoron known as the music business and they offered to help me in any way they could. ” The chemistry was such that they took time out from their own recording schedule to produce several more tracks which form the backbone of Jim’s upcoming release, No Such Place.

Simultaneously Andrew Hale, of Sade and Sweetback fame, stepped forward and generously offered his services and the use of his studio to aid and abet Jim in the recording process. “Andrew Hale is a friggin’ saint!” Jim exclaims. Conceived on a cross-country journey, he’d traversed the US no less than six times by the tender age of five, when his family put down roots in the muggy, buggy, Jesus-happy backwater of Pensacola, Florida. “This is one hell of a churchy town.” Jim notes. A fact confirmed by statistics recognizing Pensacola as the leader in the United States in density of churches per capita.

Of his inevitable experience in the church Jim recalls, “I’d got messed up with drugs real young and saw my friends get all hollowed eyed and dead looking, so I figured , if I was going to be strung out, it might as well be on Jesus.” But ever the outsider, the church was a poor fit for Jim’s quirky, irreverent character. ” I thought it would be easy, you know, close your eyes and fall into the arms of the Lord, but no matter how hard I tried to embrace it all,” speaking of his experiences with fundamentalist Christianity, “the end times prophecy, the miraculous healing, the whole maghilla, I never could quite get up to speed. I failed miserably every time I tried talking in tongues, or performing miracles. I just couldn’t cut the Jesus mustard. “

Listening to Jim recite the litany of his checkered past is often a study in bewildering contradictions. Inevitably, the ups and downs converge, then become redefined, tragedies being parlayed into blessings and vice versa. Case in point: Jim claims the best thing that ever happened to his music was every musician’s nightmare – getting the fingers on his fretting hand mangled in an industrial accident. “I took a job building chaise lounges . . . walked over to this table saw and before you could say ‘boo’, they were loading me into an ambulance, three fingers on my fretting hand looking like hamburger meat.” But ever the mythmaker, Jim parlayed that horror into a tidy little moral tale. “Sometimes limitations are assets, and likewise in reverse. Before I got mangled I was a real facile guitar player, “chord happy” I’d call it, confused and conflicted by my ability. But after I got all the pins and stitches out, and I learned how to play open chords and fret with just one finger, lo and behold, for the first time in my life what I was playing sounded right.”

Steeped in the influence of Flannery O’Connor and Tom Waits, the album Wrong-Eyed Jesus revealed Jim White as a spiritual anatomist of the American South. No Such Place ups the ante revealing a broader, more diverse collection of songs about rage and redemption, depravity and dreams, dead cars and broken hearts. With tracks produced by Morcheeba, Sade co-founder Andrew Hale, and Q-Burns Abstract Message, along with stellar remixes by Japanese underground guru, Sohichiro Suzuki of World Standard and Yellow Magic Orchestra fame, Jim finds himself reveling in the unlikely zeitgeist of the new album. “This is a crackpot love letter to all those lost souls out there like me who won’t settle for wrong, but have no clue how to get to right.”

Tracklist:

(click on songs for lyrics)

1. Give it up–your thunder is stolen. By any comparison, yours is the archetypal picket-fence existence, remarkable only for its unremarkableness. Time to pony up for the Volvo–the station wagon with the airbags and child-safety seats, naturally. Be sure to kiss the wife goodbye before you leave. And don’t forget your 2 o’clock with the new clients. You are henceforth a veritable rock of stability.

It takes a certain breed to be Jim White–to wander hell’s half-acre intent on finding that elusive something; to dabble schizophrenically in occupations, moralities, and states of mind so divergent as to belong to different lives; to come out the other end, broken, still yearning, but at peace with his (our) condition. It’s a breed simultaneously cursed and blessed: cursed from an early age by an array of existential crises; blessed with the talent to articulate those crises and the subsequent journey with the flair of a natural-born storyteller. That’s what White is, first and foremost: a storyteller in the grand Southern gothic tradition of Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, and their spiritual offspring, Denis Johnson. Only where their work is grotesque, macabre, fantastic, his is psychedelically so.

No Such Place, White’s sophomore disc, is a collection of whimsical tall tales set to music. It’s not unlike his debut of four years ago, Wrong-Eyed Jesus!, only bigger, darker, and weirder. A look back at 43 years of life-in-Technicolor, the disc is suitably all over the map, at times recalling Tom Waits at his most evocative, Neil Young at his most emotive, and PJ Harvey at her most desperate. But these tags too easily resolve a wonderful mess of an album by a man who’s clearly operating on a wavelength all his own.

Consider the lyrics: “I’m handcuffed to a fence in Mississippi/My girlfriend blows a boozy good-bye kiss/I see flying squirrels and nightmares of stigmata/Then awakening to find my Trans-Am gone”; “God was drunk when he made me, but that’s okay, ’cause I forgive him”; “From baby’s breath to the rattle of death, I seek the love that never fails.” Thus the stage is set for the “hick-hop” to come. That’s the description the singer’s given his brand of–oh, how shall we put this?–electronic-laced, bluegrass-tinged, outer-space country . . . with a hint of R&B thrown in for good measure. Not a sound that translates too well to the printed page (or computer screen), but one that’s so adventurous that a lesser description just wouldn’t do it justice.

The ambitious genre cross-pollination–from the intergalactic-planetary take on Roger Miller’s “King Of The Road” to the haunting “Corvair” to the Lou Reed hiccup that is “10 Miles To Go On A 9 Mile Road–is the work of some unlikely collaborators: trip-hop trio Morcheeba, Sade cofounder Andrew Hale, and electronic guru Q-Burns Abstract Message. It’s midnight. I see the silhouette of a suspicious character slumped down in the front seat of a tricked up Caddy a few parking spaces down. I should make for the safety of my room but instead I stay put, for just a few feet away, hovering around the warm red glow of the Coke machine, is a huge ghostly green Luna Moth. All is silent but for the dreamy hum of the vending machines and the gentle fluttering of those luminescent wings. Down in the Caddy I see the faint halo of a cigarette being sucked on just above the darkened steering wheel. A moment of pure bliss overtakes me. It’s all about the seeing, this lonely, lovely esoteric moment.

Location: Navy Boulevard here in West Pensacola. It’s a few weeks later, and my truck’s broken down near a construction site. While I’m hunched over the engine trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with it (accelerator linkage), I overhear the can-do foreman bark out at one of his helpers the phrase that will eventually become the title of this album. “Drill a hole in that substrate and tell me what you see!” he bellows. I find myself quietly laughing—no, maybe sighing in relief. Without knowing it he’s named some ghost inside my head, but which one? The phrase flutters around in my mind for days, like that ghostly Luna Moth in the midnight sky of South Carolina.

Flutter flutter flutter. Why do those words stay with me? Finally I get it—it’s an allegory of the physics of my life; the construction site is my mind, and the substrate I’ve been drilling holes in is the tangled maze of impressions that Jesus, poverty, and the loneliness of being raised an outsider in the South have conspired to lay beneath my feet. Hearing the phrase brings a sigh of relief because at long last I possess a handy name for the machinery of my existence. When you can call some such thing by name, often times it gives you a mysterious and happy kick in the ass, something akin to “power”.

Thinking back, from as far as I can remember, from earliest childhood I’ve been drilling, looking for something the surface world didn’t provide, something to make life worth living. Sad, but true. I’d unearth some relic or mysterious object and call out; “Come see what I found!” but for the most part not only did people not want to see, but they fled at the very sound of my voice. In recent years I’ve come to realize that what I was digging up were artifacts comprised mostly of personal bullshit. No wonder people were uninterested.

Eventually, like most failed John The Baptists, I resigned myself to the fact that I’d probably spend my life drilling alone, digging up things of value to me and me alone. But fate’s the trickster, isn’t it though? Not long after I truly embraced the notion of a solitary life, I noticed something that had not happened before—little crowds began gathering around my construction site. They were watching me drill. But why? Had something changed in my drilling and seeing? I guess it had.

Soon enough interesting characters began showing up, even offering to help me in my endeavors. Can you imagine? Someone like Joe Henry appearing and saying “You need a hand with that drilling?” Can you imagine, after 20 years of solitary labor, for Aimee Mann, or Chocolate Genius or The Bare Naked Ladies, or The Sadies to stop you in a hallway or an airport or a gas station and say, “Hey, you want some help with that drilling, give us a call.” Can you imagine?

What a fucking relief. Don’t be fooled by the fact that these reports are disguised in the form of “songs”, as they are reports about the state of hidden realms and should be regarded as such.
